National Institute of Industrial Engineering

NITIE was incepted in 1963 to deliver a unique mission-raising the productivity of India's industries and to make their limited resources gainfully utilized. Aided by ILO, the Government of India set up NITIE as this nation's only training institute that sought to teach materials management, work studies, inventory control, shop floor management and personnel management to India's industry professionals.

Having established itself amply successful as such (NITIE now trains nearly 2000 professionals each year), the institute launched its first formal post graduate programme-Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE)-in 1969, to teach graduates of engineering the methods and techniques of industrial engineering. Subsequently, with its qualitative and quantitative teaching capabilities ably strengthened, NITIE started its two-year management programme-Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM) -in 1994, alongside maintaining the spirited training programmes that it ran as MDPs and UBPs for industry. NITIE crafted its Industrial Safety and Environmental Management (PGDISEM) programme in response to industry requests in 2000 to address sustainability, today's emergent mission in industry and elsewhere.

Thus as time has moved, NITIE has adjusted its sails. Along with training and management education, today NITIE is vigorously engaged in industrial consultancy, sponsored projects, and applied research in management. It enviously guards its distinctive competitive edge amidst other management as well as technological institutes.

NITIE now aspires to become the sole provider of executive talents in significant numbers to help India manage emerging technologies-IT, automation, communication and biotechnology to name some-rather than create those technologies. With increasing complexity in the transfer, adaptation, absorption and indigenization of technologies, this task is anything but trivial and mere training in technology has proven here to be inadequate. To this end, in its pedagogy NITIE has carefully crafted an unmatched blend of classroom education in such technologies and management principles, and hands-on practice. Currently NITIE is engaged in an aggressive upgradation of its infrastructure to achieve these goals.
