Indian School of Mines, Howrah (Kolkata)ISM was established in the year 1926 by the Government of India to train mining engineers and geologists. It is located in the heart of the country's prime coking coal belt at Dhanbad - 260 Km away from Kolkata on Howrah-new Delhi Grand Chord Railway route. It takes 3 hours from Howrah (Kolkata) to reach Dhanbad by Shatabdi/Rajdhani Express trains. ISM has a fully residential campus with all modern amenities covering an area of 88 hectares. ISM has been celebrating its Platinum Jubilee by organizing various academic programmes throughout the year. The development of ISM for the last seven decades has been taking place both vertically and horizontally. It has become a Deemed University in 1967 under UGC Act, 1956. The Institute, at present, is funded by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India. Today, ISM has adopted the path of academic diversification. New branches of academic programmes have been added to its traditional departments and new departments have been established to cater to other industries in addition to the mineral industry.
