Footwear Design and Development Institute

Footwear Design and Development Institute commonly known, as “FDDI” is the leading Institute in India for Infrastructure Development for the footwear industry and Human Resource Development. FDDI is a society registered under the societies Act, 1860, sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India.

In 1984, the Government of India viewed with grave concern about inadequate exports of Indian Footwear in the global market. To enhance India’s share in what was termed as a “sun-shine” industry, a high-level committee was constituted to carry out an in-depth study of the problem and suggest remedial measures to overcome those shortcomings. Among the shortcomings discussed were the inadequate number of trained footwear technologists available to the Footwear Industry and an organization that would impart state-of the art training in footwear technology at Graduate/Post Graduates levels. A logical corollary of this was the necessity to set up such an organization to train students who would be absorbed by industry on completion of their training.

Some of the other issues that evolved were:

  • Provision and development of appropriate footwear infrastructure for footwear industry to make it attain international standards of production.
  • Promote growth of export production of quality Footwear. Accordingly in 1986, the Footwear Design and Development Institute was set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. Today, the Institute has attained International recognition and is serving the Footwear industries across the world.

Accordingly in 1986, the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, set up the Footwear Design & Development Institute. Today, the Institute has attained International recognition and is serving the Footwear industries not just in India, but also across the world. The institute with time has earned coveted certification ISO 9001 for all its training activities from Bureau Veritas Quality International in the year 1994.

The FDDI’s International Testing Center has both Physical Testing Laboratory and Chemical Testing Laboratory. Physical Testing Laboratory has been setup in collaboration with BALLY-Switzerland, PFI-Germany and SATRA-United Kingdom. The Chemical Testing Laboratory has been setup in collaboration and with help of PFI-Germany. The FDDI’s International Testing Center (ITC) test results are widely accepted globally across the world. The ITC has ISO 17025 certification by Deutschen Akkreditierungs Rat (DAR) of Germany and ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 by Bureau Veritas Quality International. The laboratories are accredited / approved by the BIS, DGQA, DGS&D, RITES and various other Govt. agencies. The institute is also having CAD - CAM center in collaboration with many prominent organizations for state-of-the-art design and production of pattern facility.

For promotion and growth of export production of quality footwear from India, experts from other countries are made available by the FDDI to indigenous leather industry for the imparting advanced technological knowledge. The institute has the state of art machineries and training equipments for each segment of manufacturing.

The syllabus of the courses are prepared originally by Melbourne College of Australia in 1992 for the development of the footwear sector. After this it has been revised in the first in 1996 and then in 2000 to bring the new changes in the technological area. FDDI keeps itself abreast of the newer development in the field of footwear and allied branches to update the course curriculum.
