Department of Biotechnology at Cochin University of Science and Technology
The mandate of the Department is to train human resources in Biotechnology
and to cater to the needs of the nation in harnessing the vast biodiversity
and to promote bioindustries, not only in the state of Kerala but also in
the country. Research activities of the Department are presently centred around
areas such as Microbial Technology, Medical Biochemistry, Genetic Engineering,
Molecular Neurobiology, Cell Biology and Plant Biotechnology. The research
students generally get absorbed as scientists in different national and international
laboratories and as lecturers in Universities/Colleges. On an average, about
60% of the M.Sc. students clear the NET and 80% pass the GATE. 31 students
have so far taken their doctoral degrees from the Department, which has also
about 90 scientific publication to its credit. A Centre for Neurosciences
was established during 2000 in the Department with the intention of bringing
the Industries, Medical Colleges, Research Institutions and Hospitals closer
to its research accomplishments. The centre organizes annual workshops, meetings,
lectures and awareness programmes. The centre also takes up extension activities
like conducting neurological surveys, diagnosis, awareness programme, clinical
and scientific testing. The research interests of the Centre include molecular
aspects of Neurotransmitter receptors functional regulation in relation to
Diabetes, Cell proliferation, Cancer, Herbal medicines, Alcoholism, Bone fracture
healing,Stem Cell differentiation, Hypoxia, Hypoglycemia and Adrenal stress
model studies. The Centre offers an elective paper in Molecular Neurobiology
for M.Sc. students and other interested students in the University. It provide
opportunities to do research activities in Molecular Neurobiology for students
of India and abroad. The Department has linkages with R&D institutions
and Industries such as Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences,
Indian Spices Research Centre, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Amirtha
Institute of Medical Sciences, Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, Madona
Hospital and Research Centre, Synthite Industries, Kerala Ayurveda Pharmacy
Ltd. and Medical College, Kottayam and MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery.
