Department of Political Science

The department of Political Science in Allahabad University is the second oldest department in the country, established in the year 1929. The first head of department was the illustrious historian Dr. Beni Prasad who was among the pioneers to research into the state and government in ancient India, at the London school of Economics. He was followed by two eminent scholars, also historians like him namely, Dr. Tara Chandra and Dr. Iswari Prasad, as head of department. Prof. A.B. Lal was the first man from the discipline itself to head the department He later became the University's Vice chancellor, and then the Vice Chancellor at Jaipur. He finally retired as chairman, M.P. University Grants Commission. Prof. A.B. Lal was succeeded by another scholar of ancient Indian Political thought, namely, Prof. A.D. Pant, and, on his retirement, Prof. Mohan Lal Became the head of department. He was succeeded by Prof. H.M. Jain, after him Prof. U.K. Tiwari joined as the HoD to retired in July 1999.
