Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit of AMU

The Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit was established in the year 1985 and has the privilege of having its foundation stone laid by the Nobel Laureate Prof. Abdus Salam. From the day of its inception, biotechnology was conceived as an interdepartmental and interfaculty teaching and research programme. Accordingly teachers from different Departments are actively involved in conducting the M.Sc. course. These include Department of Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Science and Department of Chemistry of Faculty of Life Science. In addition, the core teaching staff of the Institute of Biotechnology consisting of one Reader and three Lectures in Microbiology, Enzyme Engineering and Molecular Biology give courses in their specialised subjects as well as in biotechnology practicals. The M.Sc. Biotechnology programme is funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, emerging areas of biotechnology and new biology can be introduced and where preference is given to the creation of such central research facilities for advanced biotechnological or biological work as are not available in other Departments and research laboratories of this University. The most important objective of the Institute is to encourage extensive interaction among active researchers in order to achieve excellence in scientific research. While the applied aspect of biology receive emphasis the basic research without which no worth-while contribution in biotechnology is possible, is not ignored.

Inspite of the small sized faculty the Unit endeavours to obtain funding from various agencies and has received funding from DBT, DST, CSIR,ICMR. Since the year 2001 the Unit has been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology under its (FIST) programme. The IBU has an active Ph.D. programme and good infrastructure which helps in teaching training and research work in Biotechnology.

There are nine research scholars presently working in the Institute for their Ph.D.degrees in biotechnology. The existing infrastructure of the institute is suitable for research in the following areas :-

1. Molecular Biology

2. Cellular Immunology/Immunochemistry

3. Membrane Biology

4. Enzyme Engineering

5. Structure and Function of Macromolecules
